The Character of God

with resources from BibleProject

God’s description of Himself is the most quoted verse in the Hebrew Scriptures. These eight lessons explore how God reveals Himself as “a God (who is)compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, overflowing with loyal love and faithfulness.”

The more we see how God reveals Himself to us, the better we can reflect His character and ways.

Description

God rescued the Israelites from slavery to bring them to a new garden. Even before they reach the garden, God invites them into His rest. Because they don’t know how to be His partners, He teaches them His ways.

Almost as soon as the Israelites agree to be God’s partners, they break their promise. In fact, they make a gold statue of a bull and say it is the god that brought them out of Egypt. While Moses is worshiping the real God on top of the mountain, Moses’s brother is leading the Israelites in worshiping a pretend god at the bottom of the mountain.

It’s at this point in the Bible that God describes Himself for the first time. And then, even though the Israelites don’t deserve to continue as God’s partners, God shows them what He is like. He shows them His ways. Just as Adam and Eve’s original job was to reflect God’s character and ways, Israel’s job is to represent God to the rest of the world. Jesus invites us to do this, too.
