with resources from BibleProject
This curriculum offers families an opportunity to explore the character of God through the Torah, the first five books of the Bible. While it was designed for families with students in 3rd-6th grades, we’ve found it can be easily modified to engage a much wider age range. Our goal is to help your students understand and experience the Bible as one unified story that leads to Jesus. Giver of Rest is the second course in OneStory’s curriculum sequence, following Teach Us to Pray (which will be available in PDF format soon.)
All of OneStory’s digital resources are available for free thanks to the financial partnership of generous donors. Your donations enable us to create more resources and help more families explore the Bible and practice the way of Jesus. Visit the Donate page to learn about our current projects, including the Echoes of Creation Story Bible.
Description
Life is hard. As much as we want to protect our kids from this reality, it’s something we all have to face, over and over again. This was also true for Jesus and his students. But Jesus has a message for all of us: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
When Jesus’ students heard this, they undoubtedly remembered a story they had learned as children, in which God said those very words. On the top of Mount Sinai, Moses had begged God, “Teach me your ways so I may know you.” God had replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”
This rest was related to God’s promise to live alongside them in a garden-land. It also echoed how God had rested alongside humanity in the Garden of Eden. Next, Moses asked to see God’s glory. In the very next story, God does exactly that, proclaiming His name and character in Moses’ presence: “Adonai, Adonai, a God compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, overflowing with loyal love and faithfulness.”
Yes, the stories we learn as children are powerful. These particular stories link Jesus’ rest with God’s character and His continuing invitation to rest alongside us as we partner with Him in the renewal of all creation.

While we recommend completing Teach Us to Pray before beginning Giver of Rest, these studies may be taught independently.
Giver of Rest consists of 32 lessons that are 30-45 minutes each. Each Unit consists of 4 lessons, and the last lesson in each unit is a review. We encourage you to choose the lesson schedule that works best for your family:
Each lesson includes a unit prayer, lesson introduction, video from BibleProject, discussion guide, and a student worksheet.
